BAY CITY ROLLERS

With their legions of fans, their catchy tunes and their unparalleled promotional work for the tartan manufacturing industry, the Bay City Rollers were a phenomenon. The band were so successful they even had their own magazine. One pundit once claimed they would be bigger than The Beatles. Although they didn't quite reach such heights, their enduring popularity can still be witnessed today by the sheer collectability of these magazines.

 

BLACK VELVET

BLUE JEANS MAGAZINE

Blue Jeans Magazine was never at the forefront of music journalism, but it did feature some of the bigger names of the time. These mags are now very collectable and have become real rarities.

BUCKETFULL OF BRAINS

This legendary mag covered many genres, but concentrated on the artists who were either pioneering or sat comfortably on the outskirts of popular culture.

 

BURRN!

Burrn! is the world's heaviest Heavy Metal magazine. Each issue runs to around 200 pages and is packed from cover to cover with great photos, interviews and news. DISC

Disc was a popular music paper from the seventies. Although never achieving the success of the likes of NME or Melody Maker, it was an important addition to the news agents shelves and has now become a collectable mag among music lovers. EXTRA KERRANG

Kerrang - the longest running and most famous UK Rock and Heavy Metal magazine. Extra Kerrang was a supplementary magazine that was brought out from time to time to feature more in depth articles, artwork, biogs etc that weren't featured in the main mag. It was a relatively short-lived publication, but this only added to its collectability.

 

FAB 208

Fab 208 was one of the most popular teen magazines of the seventies and early eighties. They often featured the biggest UK pop artists of the age and are now very sought after magazines.

Although rarely seen on news agents shelves, fanzines and fan club magazines can be as exciting as professional publications. HARD ROXX

Hard Roxx is a UK based AOR/Hard Rock mag aimed at the more mature music fan. Filled to the brim with interviews, news and reviews, these hard to find mags have become very collectable pieces of music memorabilia.

 

HISTORY OF ROCK

The History of Rock was a magazine published by Orbis in the early eighties that provided an encyclopaedic look at the history of contemporary music. HIT PARADER

Hit Parader is a fantastic US mag full to the brim with news, interviews and some incredible concert photos. Dedicated to Rock and Metal, these mags are a great addition to any fan's library.

 

HITS

Hits produced a series of one-off magazines dedicated to a single artist. the mags were always full of exciting and often rarely seen photos.

 

HM (AUSTRALIA)

This mag from Australia features a whole host of home grown acts as well as some of the bigger names from the worldwide Heavy Metal arena. Well put together and with some fascinating interviews and articles, HM is a real pleasure to read.

 

HOT METAL

Hot Metal was an exciting monthly Rock and HM publication boasting an impressive array of names in every issue. These mags are now very hard to find and have become sought after collector’s items.

 

HURRICANE (HEROES OF ROCK)

Hurricane was a very colourful well produced magazine featuring some of Rocks biggest artists. Probably the most striking aspect of the mag is the sheer quantity and quality of photos. This alone makes these mags a welcome addition to any collector's library.

 

JAZZ GREATS

Jazz Greats was published by Marshall Cavendish and each issue covered a person, group or particular style that was pivotal to the genre. With each magazine came a CD relevant to the subject matter and together they created a fantastic addition to any jazz lover's library.

 

KERRANG

Kerrang - the longest running and most famous UK Rock and Heavy Metal magazine. These mags have now become ultra collectable pieces of music memorabilia and have featured some of the biggest and smallest names in Rock/HM.

 

KERRANG KONTAKTZ

Kerrang magazine was one of the keys behind the success of the NWOBHM movement. It helped bring the HM community together in a way no other mag had and Kerrang Kontaktz was their attempt to take that one step further. The main purpose of the mag was to put HM fans in touch with each other whether as Penpals or Gig pals. These mags have now become collectable pieces of Rock History.

 

KERRISTMAS KWIZZ KERRANG

KEYBOARD PLAYER

LADYKILLERS

Ladykillers is a much sought after publication from the Sounds/Kerrang stable. It featured the women in the Rock and Heavy Metal arena and these mags have now become real collector's items.

 

LEGACY (GERMANY)

Regardless of your ability to speak German, the sheer scale of this bi-monthly metal magazine is very impressive. Stretching up to and beyond 200 pages per issue, these mags are a great slice of Euro metal history.

 

LOOK-IN

Look-In was an immensely popular tv and music magazine dedicated to the Teen market. The mags are now very collectable and often laced with photos of some of the most popular acts of the time.

 

LOUD (PORTUGAL)

Not to be confused with the classy UK based fan magazine of the same name, this Portuguese title is a glossy full colour production concentrating on the heavier side of the metal scene. NUCLEAR BLAST (GERMANY)

NUMBER ONE MAGAZINE

Number One was a rival to Smash Hits magazine but didn't have the latter's longevity. Like Smash Hits it was aimed at the teen market and featured some interesting interviews, features and some great photos. The mags are very collectable and a fascinating snapshot of a different time.

 

OH BOY!

Although a teen interest magazine, this light publication also ventured into the pop music arena. As well as articles and the odd feature, there were some great photos.

 

OSMONDS MAGAZINES

Whether it was Donny, Marie, Little Jimmy, Merril, Wayne, Alan or Jay you liked, these magazines were and are a fantastic testament to the popularity and success of one of the biggest family names in music. They are hugely collectable and a must for any fan.

 

PATCHES MAGAZINE

Patches magazine was another teen publication which occasionally delved into the pop music arena. Although it never sold in the volume of some of the other similar mags, it has still become a sought after title.

 

POWERPLAY

Powerplay is a well produced Rock and Metal mag that features a reviews section few can compete with. Each issue is packed with great content and it provides a welcome alternative to the mainstream mags.

QUEEN

It is no surprise that one of the biggest rock bands of all time spawned many "special" publications and "one-offs" aswell as a plethora of books. Some of these have now become real rarities.

 

RAW

Raw was a well written fortnightly Rock/HM publication in a similar mould to Kerrang and indeed employed many former Kerrang contributors. Each issue was packed with interviews, news, photos and reviews of some of the biggest names in music.

Record Collector is the number one music collecting magazine in the UK. Well researched and well written articles are the bedrock of this mag which provides an excellent source of information for collectors and fans.

 

RECORD MIRROR

Record Mirror began life as a music paper and later became a smaller mag. Its core was originally rock and pop, but in later years it concentrated more on the dance and R&B genres. Regardless of the format, it always provided an entertaining and informative read.

 

RELIX

Relix magazine covers "Music for the Mind". It was originally a mag that covered the psychedelic scene, but it has evolved into much more, covering diverse genres and artists.

 

REVOLVER

Revolver is an excellent US magazine dedicated to all things Metal. Published 10 times a year it is both well written and well illustrated and would be a welcome addition to any enthusiasts library

 

RHYTHM

Rhythm is dedicated to drums and drumming. It features some of the biggest names covering all genres. These mags are an invaluable source of information for drummers and the fascinating interviews reveal insight into the minds and methods of some of the biggest and smallest names in the field.

 

RIFF RAFF

Riff Raff was a short lived but exciting mag which covered most forms of Rock from Gothic to Progressive to HM and beyond. It was always packed with interesting features and a great reviews section.

 

ROCK HARD (GERMANY)

Rock Hard is a beautifully produced German rock magazine. Possessing a stylish layout and excellent photos, it is a great addition to a fan's collection even if they don't speak the language.

SCREAM MAGAZINE (NORWAY)

This Norwegian publication features Heavy Metal bands from around the world as well as Norway. Slick and glossy production with excellent photos means these mags are great collectables even if you don't speak the language.

Select magazine is a music mag featuring most kinds of modern music. Packed with interviews, features, reviews and news, this British mag always provides a fascinating read.

 

SMASH HITS

Smash Hits was a hugely successful fortnightly pop magazine aimed at the younger end of the music buying market. It was always colourful and well laid out and contained interviews and photos with some of the biggest names in the pop (and occasionally rock) world.

 

SOUNDCHECK

Soundcheck was a short-lived but exciting magazine that was originally distributed at live gigs and selected retail outlets. It featured exclusive articles and interviews that even the most ardent music fans may not have knowledge of and as such these mags are now very collectable.

Spiral Scratch was the legendary music collecting magazine from the UK. Although featuring all genres of music it was probably most renowned for its coverage of the Punk, New Wave and Alternative scene.

SUPERSONIC MAGAZINE

Supersonic was an iconic pop magazine and TV show from the seventies. Mike Mansfield and excerpts from the show can occasionally be seen on nostalgic music programmes, but the magazines has long since disappeared from the newsagents shelves. They have become real rarities.

 

TERRORIZER

Terrorizer – The world’s No.1 Extreme music magazine. From its inception, Terrorizer has covered the loudest, heaviest, darkest rock around. These mags are a must for any extreme metal fan. THE BAND

The Band was a short lived publication which featured some of the biggest names in the UK music industry. Unlike many mags on the market, it possessed an inside look at gigging, recording and song writing. TOTAL GUITAR

Total Guitar is a well written and informative mag full of interviews, features and music. With some of the biggest and smallest names covered, there is usually something within to satisfy everyone's taste.

 

UNCUT

Uncut is a popular long-running UK music and film magazine, which successfully combines the 2 subjects to make an entertaining publication. Packed with interviews, news and reviews, this mag is a popular read with music fans and movie goers alike and is a valuable addition to any library.

 

VOX MAGAZINE

Although sadly no longer with us, this excellent mag was set up as an alternative to Q magazine to cover the more alternative end of the market. Each issues is packed with interviews, features and a very comprehensive reviews section.

 

WIRE

Wire was originally labelled "The Jazz and New Music" magazine, but the later "Adventures in Modern Music" is a much more apt title. The well written articles and fascinating interviews cover many artists who tend to get overlooked in the mainstream music press.

 

WONDROUS STORIES

Wondrous Stories began life as a fanzine and developed into a well produced glossy devoted to Classic and Progressive Rock. Always packed with information and featuring artists who often get overlooked by the mainstream music press, these mags would be a welcome addition to any collection.

 

WORDS MAGAZINE

Words is a very collectable mag from the seventies that concentrated on printing song lyrics from some of the most popular artists and songs of the time.

 

ZERO TOLERANCE

"Extreme Views on extreme music by extreme people". Zero Tolerance features Metal from around the world and each issue has fantastic interviews, articles and reviews just pouring from the pages.
